Daniel Ortega’s dictatorship, through the Ministry of the Interior, canceled four non-profit organizations (NGOs/NPOs), at least three of them related to Taiwan for alleged «non-compliance with the laws that regulate them.»
This marks the first cancellation of NGOs by the Ministry of the Interior, an entity that operated in the eighties and was revived by the Ortega dictatorship last year.
The canceled organizations are:
Chinese Association, registered in 1992.
Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Nicaragua, registered in 2011.
Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce in Nicaragua, registered in 2004.
Nicaraguan Taiwanese Business Chamber (Cetainic), registered in 2011.
According to the General Directorate of Registration and Control of Non-Profit Organizations of the Ministry of the Interior, «the aforementioned organizations have failed to meet their obligations,» which include, not reporting their Financial Statements for periods ranging from one to 12 years in accordance with fiscal periods; obstructing the supervision and oversight of the General Directorate of Registration and Control of NGOs; and not promoting transparency policies.
Since 2018, more than 3,500 NGOs have been canceled, according to the count of Nicaraguan organizations operating in exile. The cancellations began with nine NGOs in 2018 amid violent repression against civilian protests. These initial canceled NGOs were represented by opponents and/or critics of Daniel Ortega’s regime.
Properties expropiated by the Nicaraguan regime
All the assets of the associations will be transferred to the name of the State, according to the legislation that regulates non-profit organizations, AFP news agency reported.
When the Ortega dictatorship suddenly broke off relations with Taiwan in December 2021, it stripped that country of its properties in Nicaragua, including the Taiwanese embassy building in Managua and reassigned everything to the People’s Republic of China, which considers Taiwan as its own territory, and which it intends to recover even by force if necessary.
Since Managua re-established diplomatic relations with Beijing, both countries have strengthened cooperation, which includes financing for housing construction, road, airport, railway and energy infrastructure projects by Chinese companies and the provision of buses.
