Journalist Víctor Ticay marks today one year of arbitrary imprisonment. He was arrested for broadcasting a religious activity on his social media channels. The regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo sentenced him to 8 years in prison for the crimes of undermining the integrity or treason to the nation, and spreading fake news or cybercrime.
Ticay was a correspondent for the national media outlet Canal 10 and director of the digital platform La Portada. He has been in prison since April 6 for covering a religious activity during Holy Week in Nandaime, a municipality in the department of Granada.
After being declared guilty in the trial, the journalist was transferred from the Third District Police Station to the prisons of the Tipitapa Penitentiary System Jorge Navarro, better known as La Modelo.
Members of the Independent Journalists and Communicators of Nicaragua (PCIN) have repeatedly called for the release of their colleague, emphasizing that he is a journalist, not a criminal.
The arbitrary detention of Ticay has sparked widespread international condemnation and rejection, as well as the solidarity of dozens of colleagues in exile.
