The Ortega Murillo regime sought support from its friend Nicolás Maduro to ‘back’ their position regarding the call made by the Human Rights Commission in Geneva to address the Nicaragua issue on December 18th.
Through a letter addressed to Yván Gil Pinto, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the dictatorship expresses the request for ‘support for our position of respect for the essential rights of Nicaraguan families.»
According to the letter, the representative for the Nicaraguan dictatorship will be the Attorney General of the Republic, Wendy Morales, who will present «this dignified and sovereign position» of the dictatorship.
Close friendship of Ortega´s dictatorship with Nicolás Maduro
Tamara Sujo, Venezuelan opposition leader and lawyer, expressed that the «democratic Venezuelan people condemn the crimes against humanity committed in Nicaragua against its people,» but pointed out that «criminals understand each other», referring to the «friendship» between Nicolás Maduro and Ortega.
Nicolás Maduro’s regime in Venezuela is among the few in the western hemisphere that continues to support the Nicaraguan dictatorship.
Nicaragua is facing a wave of human rights violations where dissenting voices have been silenced, and persecution against citizens of all backgrounds has escalated.
Reports from the international community reflect how human rights defenders and opposition figures have been forced to leave Nicaragua. This includes constant surveillance, harassment in public and private spaces, ongoing criminalization, and the use of arbitrary detentions.
Religious figures, particularly the Catholic Church, have increasingly become targets of attacks in Nicaragua and have been forced to leave. Upon reaching foreign soil, they’ve faced arbitrary deprivation of nationality, confiscation of assets, and intimidation of their relatives back in Nicaragua.
The Group of Human Rights Experts on Nicaragua (GHREN) that follows the situation for the Commission on Human Rights in Geneva since 2022 previously stated that the Nicaraguan government is committing widespread human rights violations, that amount to crimes against humanity.
«These violations and abuses are perpetrated in a widespread and systematic manner for political reasons and constitute crimes against humanity including murder, imprisonment, torture, including sexual violence, deportation, and persecution for political reasons,» they stated.
